We always give away a new book to all our summer reading participants each year and, since I was just turned down for a Dollar General grant that would have helped with that, the 50 new books in the box were truly a blessing for us. Also included were copies of the "Incandesto" comic by Kate DiCamillo made especially for this summer's library programming. The kids will love these! The posters and bookmarks included are great for promoting our program to ensure that our children's brains don't turn to mush over the summer (yes, that's what I tell them!). Keeping the literacy skills strong and refreshed over the vacation months help students returned ready to start the new school year on top instead of sliding behind.
The school librarian and several teachers were kind enough to disrupt their schedules during the first week of May so that I could visit with all the students and challenge them to exercise their minds as well as their bodies this summer. We are looking forward to a great summer with lots of activities for our community.
A big thanks to all who made this wonderful surprise possible!
