Thanks to everyone who visited our Technology Petting Zoo on Saturday. We had fun sharing the variety of ways that people are downloading free eBooks on mobile devices now. The staff also had fun playing with the Nabi Jr. and figuring out all the cool things that kids can do with it. If you have any questions and couldn't make it on Saturday (yes, it was a big playoff game at home later that afternoon!) please don't hesitate to come in and find the answers. We are always glad to help patrons take advantage of the free eBooks to which we have access via South Dakota Titles to Go!
My favorite...No, wait. I mean, ONE of my favorite tasks as librarian is researching and hunting down answers to patrons' questions. Our patrons often come in and try to "stump the librarian" with interesting queries, such as "I was reading an article about teen idols. Where can we find information about teen idols in the 50s, such as James Dean?" or "I have lots of zucchini and I need a recipe with chocolate and zucchini, but no eggs" or "Do you know how many miles it is from here to Kearney, Nebraska?" or "I need a bus ticket to Chicago. Where is the closest bus station and how much is a ticket and is there transportation to the bus station/"
Today's top question came from a rancher who wanted to purchase pesticides for her land but had to to be certified as a pesticide applicator first. We were able to find the requirements and the test online, set up a laptop in the meeting room so she could exceed our 30 minute time limit, and provided her with some leftover Halloween chocolate to keep her going after she had been working hard for over an hour!
