It was a challenge to finish reading all the YARP nominees before doing the book talks at the middle and high school during this past Teen Read Week. But I enjoyed many of the books and I noticed that a few have been checked out already, which makes me feel like it was all worthwhile. Read. Vote!
When you tell people that you're going to a library conference in Watertown, they tend to respond sympathetically and say "Aw, that's too bad." But they have obviously never been to an SDLA conference!
I enjoyed all of the sessions I attended and learned something new that I could use at each one. It was great networking with colleagues and friends, especially when your library is a little off the beaten track. The keynote speakers were humorous and positive. (I've been to teacher's conferences where all you learn is how ineffective you are and I would come home feeling beaten down instead of lifted up!)
Best of all was having Kristen, one of our library's trustees, attend with me. It was great comparing notes from different sessions and having someone to go with me to the Terry Redlin Art Center (awesome place!) for the evening reception. She was a wonderful roommate for many reasons, but most of all because she liked to read before bed!
Looking forward to next year in Chamberlain!
